If You Build It . . .

On Friday, we left Peoria and headed toward Dubuque, Iowa. We drove north along the Mississippi River and had many beautiful views of the river along the way. There was also lots of obvious flooding. A few homes were so close to the river, that with the flooding, they appeared to actually be islands in the river, with only part of the home sticking up above the water. Very sad.

We drove through part of Mississippi Palisades State Park, which was adjacent to the highway and had some nice views of the river.

We continued on and just before leaving Illinois, we drove through the town of Galena. Since we had our camper attached and there was no place to park, we decided to come back tomorrow without the camper to see this quaint little town. So more about Galena in the next blog.

We crossed the Mississippi River which took us from Illinois to Iowa.

We drove to our campsite, and after setting up camp and resting a bit, we were on to our next adventure. We drove to the Field of Dreams, the site where the movie by the same name was filmed. Neither of us have seen the movie, but supposedly the famous line “If you build it, they will come” is from this movie. We saw the ball park, (so I guess they were right; they built it and we came), the house where supposedly the farmer (played by Kevin Costner) lived, and of course, a gift shop. We were trying to decide if we wanted to buy some clothing that said “Field of Dreams” on it, but even the clothing that was on sale didn’t tempt us. We would have to say that the whole place was underwhelming.

And then this nice little sign as we were leaving:

After we left the Field of Dreams we drove to Eagle Point State Park where there were some overlooks with nice views of the Mississippi River, including some locks and dams. The water lever of the Mississippi is usually lower on one side of the dam; however, due to recent rains, the level was the same on both sides.

Our impression of Dubuque is that it is a very nice city with great natural beauty, considering its proximity to the Mississippi River. I'll end this blog post with a quote by Charles M. Robinson, an eastern park specialist, who had this to say about Dubuque (you decide if it is a positive or a negative). "I have never seen a place where the Almighty has done more, and mankind less, than Dubuque."
